Consecutive interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is also known as accompanying oral interpretation, or follow-up translation. Consecutive interpreting is used often on official meetings of politicians, businessmen, training, negotiations, presentations, speeches, interviews and press conferences. The speaker stops after a few sentences to let the interpreter tell the same in the target language. The speaker divides his speech into short and long sections. The longer sections are interpreted on the basis of notes made and keywords, noted by the interpreter when the speaker tells the content in his source language. The interpreter contents are usually shorter than the original document, and the mission of the professional interpreter is to skilfully select, combine and express the contents. In some cases short parts of speeches are interpreted, or even one sentence after another is spoken in the target language. The interpreter does his best to express the original contents as truly as possible. However, what he is doing, can hardly be named consecutive interpreting. The proper name is liaison. In general, depending on the needs and nature of the meeting, consecutive interpreting may recap in detail or in short the contents of the speech, to restore the speaker’s train of thoughts.

Consecutive interpreting takes more time than simultaneous, but is more precise and offers a better reproduction of the translated contents.
